A Meeting of Souls

A poem about meeting

Something happened when you looked at me.

It wasn’t really looking in the ordinary way,

Rather your soul came out to meet me,

She waited there patiently, tenderly,

Her look let me know I could come out too if I wanted to,

Out of stories and preoccupations about myself.

It is funny, in a not so funny way, that when I stop thinking about me I can start being me instead,

Your being, being you, beckoned mine,

She said, it’s ok, it’s safe out here,

Safely scary, safely dangerous, safely alive,

There is nothing less safe than deadness,

I was moved by your aliveness, moved forward to meet you,

As I did, the the noise suddenly stopped, like a fridge that I didn’t know was humming in the background,

Oh! What a relief. How spacious it is out here,

And there you were in front of me,

Hello there, I said,

You nodded,

Our souls did a sort of soul version of shaking hands,

It sounds more formal than it was,

What it really was an ‘I love you’, like I really love you

I love you too, you said.

And then, a wave of the sweetest sadness, a burst of radiant joy, a smile like a flower blooming from my heart to my face,

And finally, perhaps only a minute had passed, the moment passed,

I went back into the shell to rest from the sheer intensity of being,

Glad that there is now a trail of energetic breadcrumbs,

An experience imprinted on my being

And an option to go back there whenever I choose.
